Muiderslot's past starts with Earl Floris V. Around 1280 he built a stone fortress at the mouth of the Vecht. The Vecht was the navigation route to Utrecht, the in those day most important trade-town. No wonder toll was asked at the Muiderslot. In 1296 Floris V was captured during a falconhunt and was held captured in his own Muiderslot. After the murder of Earl Floris, days after his capturing in the neighbourhood of Muiderberg, Muiderslot was destroyed. About 100 years later the fortress was built again on the same place using its original plan. |
